Well the local MP has been having a
good old rant again, all duly reported by the BBC(http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-16895253) and nothing
seems to make this MP happier than a good old rant and a spot of
media coverage. Facts be damned, its Paul Flynn rant time again.
Yes be it the gassing of badgers,
farmers suicides or libel cases and indeed I have covered elsewhere
his rant that led to him being sued and cost us taxpayers £10,000
quid in legal costs. Sadly like then, his reporting of this program
and fact checking has never been Paul Flynn's strong point.
He seems to think that a rather tongue
in cheek “documentary” on hard working door staff and the often
rather tired and emotional folk they have to deal with is “"exaggerated pessimism”, in his words and claims that people are "grossly under-informed on the city" he claims.
Hardly, as an ex-doorman myself – pre
SIA days – I found myself laughing and agreeing with many of the
comments. Such stories could be told of any town or city in the land
of folk having a shandy or 6 to many. Dare I say it, many of the Rt
Hon. Members in the House of Commons have been known to over indulge
in the bottle on occasions.
Flynn huffs and puffs and describes
Channel 4 and the program in this term "one malicious TV programme on a minority channel".... Right, that would be the same
Channel 4 that one Paul Flynn MP, praised to the skies only a few
months before for in depth reporting. Its always nice to see MP's
being consistent in their views on a subject.
Maybe Flynn only wants positive fluff
stories about his city, or stories where he can pass the blame onto
evil Tories? Channel 4 pointed out that Newport had been hit hard by
the recession, is that wrong? Is it wrong to show the underside of
city life and those who work hard to control it?
Anyway for those not in know, said
program(http://www.channel4.com/programmes/bouncers) covered a few doorstaff – I hate the term bouncers
myself – their lives and showed a few fine examples of piss
heads, er tired and emotional folk being helped and helped on their
way.
Far from being a montage of drunks
being tossed out of pubs/clubs, it also focused on one chap who was
getting married and also the security company that he worked for. I
would go further and state that rather than doing down the town as Mr
Flynn puts it, it showed them as helpful and professional folk doing
a rather unpleasant job in order to earn a crust.
Sadly unlike our MP, they have not got
the privilege sit about on £65K+ a year and a £100+ in expenses
each and every year.
He might have focused some of his
comments on the fact that one of the clubs was a gay club – not
sure if that's been frequented by certain Welsh Assembly members but
I digress – and providing a safe environment for them, thats
customers not Assembly Members. Yet nothing positive from Flynn on
that.
At no point does Flynn point out the
good work by security staff in areas like drug prevention where they
actively work with the police, something any MP should be promoting.
Neither does he point out the instances in the program where trouble
was calmed down, something security staff are skilled at doing. That
is something that leads to less arrests, less work for the police and
the courts and less cost to the taxpayers and that, if nothing else
should have been praised by him.
Flynn shows another out of touch MP,
one who has rarely -if ever - has been seen in Newport's fine
hard working pubs and clubs. An MP who spends all his time enforcing
taxes and regulations to force them into bankruptcy. One that from
the looks of his expenses, would appear to enjoy his tipple like he
does his socialism, with a large dose of champagne.
Getting back to the rather bizarre
title of this piece, years ago the League of Gentlemen comedy group
created a town of dysfunctional misfit characters called Royston
Vasey. They never created a character for the MP of that fictional
town, but if they had Paul Flynn would have been absolutely perfect
for the role.
Newport deserves so much better than
Paul Flynn MP.
Finally over to the GLC!
